Old Palace Chester was originally built as a residence for Samuel Peploe, Bishop of Chester, in 1751. It is one of the earliest Georgian buildings in Chester in a location that enjoys a high degree of privacy and lovely views across The Groves and River Dee.

Old Palace Chester through the ages

Whilst Old Palace Chester was first commissioned in the 1730s and completed in 1751. After Samuel Peploe died in 1752, the house remained a home of residence until it became formally associated with the residence and administrative centre of the Bishops of Chester between 1866 and 1920.

In 1920 the building was converted into the Chester YMCA, and in 1922 Bishop Luke Paget (1919-32) moved into the Deanery within the Abbey precincts close to the Cathedral. The YMCA vacated the site in the 1980s, and during 1987 / 88, the building was refurbished and extended as offices.

The building is listed Grade II and contains some nationally significant interiors, with plasterwork by Italian stuccatori.
